ALPACKA / GOAT MIXED MANURE

Garden.jpg

Alpaca and goat manure is lower in organic matter than other traditional maures, and has a lot of value in your garden.  Many fardeners find this type of manure to be an excellent source of nutrients for optimal soil and plant health.  In our own experience, the manure mix converted our garden from wimpy plants in hardpacked clay to an explsoion of prolific vegetables and flowers.  We use it in everything we plant, from ornamentals and edibles to ground covers and shade trees.

Alpaca and goat manure quite beneficial in several ways.  Even with its lower organic content, the manure mix is considered a rich soil conditioner.  The manure miximproves the soil quality and its ability to retain water.  The manure mix provides a fair amount of nitrogen and potassium and about average levels of phosphorus.  It can be spread on the surface and watered in, or tilled into the dirt to create nice soil.

Alpaca-Goat mixed manure is produced mainly in pellet form.  It has a lower amount of weed seeds than other livestock manures (cattle and horses), and therefor won't add extra weeding chores to your garden.  The pellets can be sprinkled over the top of plants without burning them, watered in, or tilled into the dirt to create loamy soil.  Either way, this manure breaks down rather quickly.  The mix is nearly odorless, but deer find it offensive.  The pellets can be used to give new seedlings a jump start... Simply soak 1/2-cup pellets in one cup of water and let them soak overnight, then use the manure "tea" to water your young plant starts.

Our alpaca-goat mixed manure is available year-round, in quantities to fit your needs.  Bring your buckets, bags, boxes, truck or trailer and we'll be happy to fill them up.  Delivery service is available for a fee, ranging from a few boxes to a full dump trailer load.

ALPACA FLEECE FOR SALE

Alpaca fleece is the natural fiber harvested from our alpacas, Winston and Cromwell.  (Visit them           ) Also known as Huacaya, the fleece fiber grows and looks similar to the fluffy wool on sheep.  Huacaya fiber can be spun into various weights of yarn.  It is a soft, durable, luxurious and silky natural fiber.  Our alpacas produce a gray to rose-gray color.

Light crimp.jpg

While alpaca fleece is similar to sheep's wool, it is warmer, not prickly, and has no lanolin, making it hypoallergenic.  Alpaca fleece fibers are actually hollow, making it a very good heat insulator, naturally water-repellent and fire resistant.  Alpaca fleece has a natural crimp, thus making a naturally elastic yarn well-suited for knitting.  The preparation process (carding, spinning, weaving, and finishing) is very similar to the process used for sheep wool.

Shearing Cromwell.JPG

We shear our alpacas around April each year, producing raw fleece that is available while the supply lasts.  It requires muscle and finesse, and usually a group effort.  However, the alpacas are visibly more comfortable in the hot summer months after their fleece has been removed!

The longer fleece that is sheered off in full-length layers is known as Blanket Fleece.
